“… please, don’t be upset by my words of criticism; you will no doubt understand that it requires superhuman strength, to see, on the one hand, the terrible fear of so many thousands of people, and, on the other hand, to keep receiving the catastrophic news from Poland. In a middle of all that, there is a feeble hope for rescue. It is up to us to save the people from this dreadful disaster. I am certain that you receive my arguments with full understanding, for we rely on you, on our friends who stand by us with their aid in this hour of need. The fate of the prisoners is terrible. Blood freezes in veins when one reads the reports. I think that now, when the winter dawns, we have to expect a mass grave to open there and to see one of the most tragic chapters of history of global Jewry to close there. The old and frail, mothers and wives will be dying, yet, what is worse, especially the children – our future. They keep perishing of hunger and epidemics, and by the brutal hand of the enemy. It is also here that we have a chance to help.”

Letter to Sally Mayer, 17 September 1942
