“At one point we felt that we did it and the Slovak deportations had been altogether halted; that there was no more danger of deportations. Yet it was by no means certain. At the time, Weissmandl came up with the fantastic idea: just as we had worked on behalf of the rescue of Slovak Jews, why not start developing the so-called Europa Plan, to try to make first steps to see whether the Germans might want to engage in a much more extensive rescue action which he called the Europa Plan. Some of the members, having heard it for the first time, naturally said that it was mere fantasy and entirely impossible for us to accomplish. They said that we should not deal with it at all. It was Gisi Fleischmann and I, perhaps because of my enthusiasm of youth, who said that I would like to try it, so we should give it a try; why not, it is a beautiful idea … Gisi Fleischmann was the second in the group who said that she would very much like to try it and that we should go for it.”

Andrej Steiner, member of the Working Group in a conversation with Yeshayahu Jelinek, Atlanta 1967
